Day 13, Sunday July 3rd, 2011

 "Heiau rocks..."--Lynch (Batesville Bulldog)

On this day, the group visited the Place of Refuge, which in Hawaiian is called Pu'uhonua o Honaunau. In ancient Hawaiian times, if someone broke kapu (the law), in order to be spared your life, you had to run to this place. There were several of them scattered over the islands. If you made it, then a priest would absolve your sins, and you would be free to leave. I don't think many made it to these places however...

We also did a little cracking of macadamia nuts along the road, visited Kealakekua Bay (where Captain Cook met his demise), stopped off at the Kona Coffee Mill, and did a little shopping in Kailua town before the luau. The luau was in a different location this year due to damage from the tsunami that devastated Japan.

It was a long, good day, and the kids were good sports after learning that the dorms were without electricity. This was the first of three unfortunate events. We all either had a flashlight or a headlamp, so it was all good. Showers and packing had to wait until morning though.
